An Indian blackbuck leaps for its life - perhaps to escape a pouncing tiger…?
This is an exceptionally delicately detailed painting, and a classic example of the Shah Wali twist on Indo-Persian miniatures.
As well as a favoured prey of the tiger, blackbuck were also a favourite quarry for Shikari (hunting) during the British Raj. This painting therefore bridges the traditions of precolonial Indo-Persian miniature painting with the nostalgia of colonial British India, to make a piece entirely original and distinctively Shah Wali.
This painting is a delight on its own, and would also form the perfect diptych together with “Pouncing Tiger”.
