In the Thai province of Sukhothai, the Buddhist ordination ceremony involves the “Naga”, or prospective monk, being paraded to the monastery whilst mounted on an elephant. This is a very particular practice of the ethnic Lao Phuan - and their language is one with which I have become increasingly familiar over the years.
