The Prisoner's Wife, 2022

£100.00

Gouache, gold acrylic & ink on board.

A5

This painting is #2 in a series-of-six polyptych.

The calligraphy is of a stanza of a Persian poem I composed whilst in Afghanistan a decade ago, about the experience of an Afghan farmer captured by the foreign forces and sent to the notorious US-run Bagram internment facility.

It reads:

Ān shabī kē khārejī-hā āmadand
Wa khānam rā bīrūn kishīdand
Marā zadand o dar tayāra guzāshtand
Bīdār shudam dar mahbas-i Bagrām

Translation:

That night when the foreigners came
And dragged my wife outside,
They beat me and put me in an aircraft;
I awoke in the prison of Bagram
