Interned indefinitely without trial in the notorious US-run Bagram internment facility, the Afghan villager's anger and resentment increases, as his beard turns grey with the passing of the years. The Persian calligraphy of the poem's final stanza reads:

Afghānistān kē watan-i khudam ast,
Ārām bād! Ābād bād! Āzād bād kulish!
Man kē nambar shudam - bidūn-i nām -
Bāyad tā kay bomānam dar mahbas-i Bagrām?

Translation:

Afghanistan, my homeland,
Be peaceful! Be prosperous! Be free, entirely!
I, who have become a number - without a name -
How long must I stay in the prison of Bagram?
